CAMARASAURUS supremus
Camarasaurus was a large Jurassic sauropod, a saurischian dinosaur,
belonging to the family Camarasauridae. It was one of the smallest of the
sauropods, whose intelligence belonged to the lowest of the dinosaurs.
Camarasaurus was a herbivore, that swallowed leaves whole and may have swallowed
gastroliths. With its long neck it could eat the fresher materials at the
top of the larger trees. Being a herd animal, the Camarasaurus was
constantly bothered by predacious dinosaurs, one of which was the
Allosaurus. Fossils of Camarasaurus have been found in groups, adult and
young together. It is believed, that they may have cared for their young,
and may have hatched from eggs. Camarasaurus was a long-necked, long-tailed
dinosaurus, that subsided in moist tropical plains.
Its name, meaning "chambered lizard", is derived from the holes in its
vertebrae, that decrease its weight. It had a small head, lightly built
skull, short face, big eyes and a blunt snout. Its teeth were long, thick,
spoon-shaped and blunt cropping. It probably had a good sense of smell. Its
tail and neck were shorter than most other sauropods. Camarasaurus probably
walked slowly, on four thick legs with five-toed feet; the inner toe had a
long, sharp claw. The front legs were a little bit shorter than its hind
limbs.
Camarasaurus is one of the few dinosaurs, whose fossilized young have
been found.
ALLOSAURUS fragilis
Allosaurus was a theropod and it belongs to allosauridae family. It is
often referred to as "the wolf of the Jurassic", because it was very
widespread animal. The Allosaurus was the main meat eating dinosaur of the
Jurassic and the greatest worry of the herbivorous dinosaurs of its group.
Allosaurus was probably pack hunter, it traveled in small group to
assist each other in attack on a larger animal, such as Apatosaurus.
Allosaurus was an active hunter, it was not a scavenger.
Its environment was open and dry, with patches of conifers, ferns and
cycads. A nest of Allosaurus was found in Wyoming, USA, with remains of
adults and very young individuals. The herbivore bones, found in the nest,
indicate that Allosaurs may have brought food to their young.
Allosaurus had a bony red crest above each eye, strong back and
S-shaped neck; tail probably comprised more than half of the Allosaurus'
total length. Its forelimbs with three long, hook-like claws (up to 10
inches/25 cm long) were quite short, but powerful. These were important for
attacking and holding on to prey; Allosaurus may have used its arms to
grapple with smaller animals. Its skull was quite small in relation to its
body.
Allosaurus is one of the most recognized of all predatory dinosaurs;
there were found thousands of fossilized bones in North America. It received
its name (meaning "lizard-hipped" or "other lizard") based on some small
finds in 1877 and the first complete skeleton was unearthed in 1883 and
1884.
